 Post Modernism

The Post Modernism movement was most popular during the 1980s. The Memphis Movement was a group of designers that were dedicated to putting an end to Modernism. The members of this group were Ettore Sottsass, Michele de Lucchi, Michael Graves, and George Sowden. They gathered at an exhibition in Milan in 1981 to challenge Modernism. 

The New York Five

The New York Five was a group of modern architects in New York City. This group consisted of Peter Eisenman, Michael Graves, Charles Gwathmey, John Hejduk, and Richard Meier. 

 Michael Graves

Michael Graves studied at Architecture Harvard University. He embraced decorative detail and was known for using strong colors and forms. He embraced classical architecture and returned to the use of ornamentation.

Charles Gwathmey

Charles Gwathmey was an architect and educator. He is most well-known for the Gwathmey Residence which he designed for his parents. He also known for his design for the Mission to the United Nations Center.

Richard Meier

Richard Meier studied at Cornell University. He was known for geometric design and merging the interior and exterior spaces in his designs. 

John Hejduk

John Hejduk studied at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He focused on a geometric cubist style of design. He also studied the juxtaposition of private and public spaces. 

Peter Eisenman

Peter Eisenman studied at the University of Cambridge. He was known for his unpredictable designs. His design style was largely Deconstructivism.

One Step Further:

Charles Gwathmey was a very well known architect and part of the New York Five. He is well known for his Modern architecture designs. I created a precedent project on the Schroder House which is one of his most well-known projects. I added my SketchUp model below. He designed this house for his parents. It includes more public spaces below and private/studio spaces above.
